Good news from the future!
Here Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveils the company’s two game-changing new battery products that promise to to help humanity fulfil its energy needs using solar energy only.
The problem with solar has always been that we can harness the power of the sun using solar panels, but we have not had batteries effective enough to store that energy for use when the sun is not shining.
The new Tesla Powerwall (the home and small business solution) and the larger “Gigwatt-Class” PowerPack product are lithium-ion batteries that allow solar energy to be stored indefinitely for later use. This is the first invention that promises to help humanity to shed our reliance on suicidal fossil fuels.
Musk estimates that it would take 2 billion Powerpacks worldwide to fulfil all of man’s energy needs (transport, electricity and heating) and transition the world to sustainable energy. That is roughly the number of cars on earth right now. “So this is actually within the power of humanity to do,” as Elon says.
The PowerWalls and PowerPacks will be manufactured in Gigafactories (The first one will be in Nevada). The idea is that the Gigafactory technology will be open-source and available for competitors to use.
This will allow many other companies to begin building the technology, and thus to hasten the transition to a sustainable energy future with now CO2 emissions .
“This is something that we must do. That we can do, and that we will do,” Musk says.
Powerpacks begin shipping in three or four months. So put that planetary suicide watch on hold!
