Oscars: Behind the Scenes in the TV truck

The view from the TV truck as director Louis J Horvitz directs the 70th annual Academy Awards in 1997. Here he wills his team to capture the experience in all its manic exuberance as Cuba Gooding Jr steps up to collect his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Jerry Maguire.

It’s an informative insight for the uninitiated and a showcase of the zen-like presence of mind and dynamic urgency required for live directing. Louis J was in the moment here. He won an Emmy award for for this effort, for Outstanding Directing for a Variety or Music Program.

Also known for his work on music show Solid Gold, Louis won six Emmys for his live directing skills. Famously, he would accept the Emmys from the control booth, because he would be directing the very show that was honouring him. He’d be shouting directions to the team while accepting his going in the TV truck.
